Subject:  We need action on the Climate Crisis

Dear____________ (Representative)

My name is _________ and I am a constituent of _________ (enter your electorate) in ________ (enter your suburb).

I am writing to you because I am deeply concerned that The United States is not taking enough action to fight the climate crisis and is going in the wrong direction on climate change.

The Great Barrier Reef is dying, the Amazon is burning and our planet is suffocating. Our current action on climate change is insufficient, and a slap in the face to the younger generations who cannot yet vote and will have to fix this mess and face the consequences.

The 2018 IPCC Special Report on Global Warming states ‘Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society.’ We have yet to see even a skerrick of this drastic action required by the Australian (or your state government) Government. Instead, Adani has been approved, drilling is being considered in the Bight and we are considered one of the eleven worst countries for deforestation by the WFF.

Now is the time to act. The costs of renewable energy are falling, and supporting a green economy not only ensures a future for us and this planet but is also beneficial to American jobs and progress.

As my representative in ________ (State or Federal) government, I am asking you to call for stronger action on our climate crisis.

Yours in climate action,

________ (your name)

Dear {Business Owner}

For a number of decades we have known that climate change is a real threat based on the scientific evidence and growing consensus of over 97% of climate scientists. Yet, nothing significant has been accomplished by our federal government to take action on climate change. In 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change published the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C, a dire warning of the rapidly approaching dangers of climate change.

The IPCC report illuminates what we can see happening for ourselves: increasing natural disasters and devastating storms, deepening agricultural impacts, growing health consequences and heavy economic impacts all due to our greenhouse gas emissions into the earth’s atmosphere. However, this time, the report suggests a much closer timeline than ever before. We must make significant changes to substantially lower greenhouse gas emissions in the next decade. The consequences could be dire if we don’t act immediately.

We are witnessing an ongoing water crises and droughts, loss of forests due to disease and wildfires, hurricanes, floods, sea level rise, decreasing air and water quality  as well as overall warmer temperatures — all of which are consequences of our changing climate. With the projected 2 degree rise in temperature, these impacts will grow exponentially as will their effects on our lives.

Many of us wonder, “What will the future be for our children and grandchildren if we don’t do anything?”  Our government struggles to admit the reality of climate change, let alone, do anything about it.  Our grandchildren, future generations and all life are depending on the choices we make now. As an elder, I am writing to ask {Business Name} to take action immediately before the consequences of climate change become such that life here in the US will be uninhabitable in some areas. Please consider the environmental and climate impacts of your organization and find ways to lessen greenhouse gases created as a byproduct of your business. I also encourage {Business Name} to use your reputation and status to advocate for 100% clean energy by 2050 foer our climate safety.

For your grandchildren and future generations,

(YOUR NAME, City and State)

Hello, My name is {Insert your name} I live in {town/state/zip code}. I am a climate activist.

This pandemic has shown that massive mobilization against grave threats is possible and, when we have stopped Covid-19, we will be ready to stop the destruction of our planet.   Now is the time to ensure climate action is addressed as we recover and move forward beyond Covid-19.

I urge you to use this time to think about what we are facing if the Earth continues to warm:  shortages of food and drinking water, mass extinctions of plant and animal life, and millions driven from their homes by rising sea levels, drought, famine and fire.  To re-think what must be done about this.

As your constituent, I want leadership, courage and action.  I urge you to begin working now to revive our economy by making it a green recovery, with zero carbon emissions by 2050.
